18th Annual 5K – to benefit Pittsburgh Steelwheelers

For 18 years, the Western Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers Association (WPTLA) has been organizing and holding an annual 5K to benefit a local organization, the Pittsburgh Steelwheelers.  The Pittsburgh Steelwheelers is an amazing group that began in the 1970’s when four men decided to turn their dream of having a Pittsburgh-based wheelchair basketball team into a reality.  Since then the organization has grown and used funds raised by the WPTLA to purchase specialized equipment and motor vehicles to accommodate those who are confined to a wheelchair who wish to keep their athletic drive alive.  This year the event will be held at North Park on Saturday October 20, 2018.  Registration begins at 9:00 a.m.  This is a walk/run/wheel event in a beautiful setting with door prizes, raffle prizes and more!  Click the link below for more details and to register.  We hope to see you there!

Statement from the Executive Board of the Western Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers Association in response to the recent Superior Court decision in Trigg v. Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC.

A core mission of the Western Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers Association is to promote, improve and advance the right to a trial by jury.  One of the most essential elements of a jury trial is a fair and impartial jury.  This impartiality is protected through the voir dire process where potential jurors are vetted to discern actual bias or the appearance of partiality or bias.   Last year our Supreme Court, in the case of Shinal v. Toms, 162 A.2d 429 (Pa. 2017), noted that the discretion afforded to a  trial judge in granting or denying challenges for cause was directly
